EA 10.3 Recollecting Generosity

  1. 聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。

Thus have I heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

2. 爾時,世尊告諸比丘:

「當云何觀檀越施主?」

At that time, the Bhagavaan addressed the Bhikshus: “How should one regard daana-patis (donor lord)?”

3. 爾時,諸比丘白世尊曰:

「世尊是諸法之王,唯願世尊與諸比丘而說此義,聞已盡當奉持。」

The Bhikshus replied to the Bhagavaan: “Bhagavaan is the king of all Dharmas. We pray Bhagavaan to explain this meaning to the Bhikshus. Having heard, we will completely uphold it.”

4. 爾時,世尊告諸比丘:

「諦聽!諦聽!善思念之,我當與汝分別其義。」

The Bhagavaan told the Bhikshus: “Listen carefully! Listen carefully! Reflect well upon this, and I will explain the meaning to you.”

5. 對曰:「如是。

世尊!」爾時,諸比丘從佛受教。

They replied: “So be it, Bhagavaan!”

Then the Bhikshus received the teaching from Budha.

6. 世尊告曰:

「檀越施主當恭敬,如子孝順父母,養之、侍之,長益五陰,於閻浮利地現種種義。

觀檀越主能成人戒、聞、三昧、智慧。

諸比丘多所饒益,於三寶中無所罣礙,能施卿等衣被、飲食、床榻、臥具、病瘦醫藥。

是故,諸比丘!

當有慈心於檀越所,小恩常不忘,況復大者!

恒以慈心向彼檀越,說身、口、意清淨之行,不可稱量,亦無有限。

身行慈,口行慈,意行慈,使彼檀越所施之物,終不唐捐,獲其大果,成大福祐,有大名稱,流聞世間,甘露法味。

如是,諸比丘!當作是學。」

The Bhagavaan said: “Daana-patis should be respected just as a child respects and serves their parents – nourishing, serving them, thereby enhancing their five aggregates (skandhas), manifesting various benefits in Jambu-dviipa.

Understand that donors help perfect ones precepts, learning, samaadhi and wisdom.

They greatly benefit Bhikshus, creating no obstacles in the Three Jewels (Budha, Dharma, Sangha), providing them with robes, food, beds, bedding, and medicine for sickness.

Therefore, O Bhikshus! Maintain loving-kindness toward donors – never forgetting small kindnesses, let alone great ones! Constantly show them loving-kindness in body, speech and mind, teaching them pure conduct beyond measure or limit.

Practice bodily, verbal and mental loving-kindness so their offerings are never in vain, but bear great fruit, become great blessings, gain great renown spreading through the world like the sweet dew of Dharma. Thus, Bhikshus, you should train.”

7. 爾時,世尊便說偈曰:

「施以成大財, 所願亦成就;
王及諸賊盜, 不能侵彼物。
施以得王位, 紹繼轉輪處;
七寶具足成, 本施之所致。
布施成天身, 首著雜寶冠;
與諸妓女遊, 本施之果報。
施得天帝釋, 天王威力盛;
千眼莊嚴形, 本施之果報。
布施成佛道, 三十二相具;
轉無上法輪, 本施之果報。」

Then the Bhagavaan spoke this verse:

“Through giving comes great wealth, all wishes fulfilled;

Neither kings nor thieves can steal what has been given away.

Through giving, one gains kingship, succeeding to the throne of a Chakravartin monarch;

The seven treasures manifest in full—this is the fruit of past generosity.

Through charity, one is reborn in heaven, adorned with jeweled crowns,

and enjoys the company of celestial maidens—this is the reward of giving.

Through giving, one becomes Sakra, lord of the devas, mighty in power,

adorned with a thousand eyes—this is the fruit of past generosity.

Through charity, one attains Buddhahood, adorned with the thirty-two marks,

and turns the supreme Dharma-wheel—this is the reward of giving.”

8. 爾時,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行。


When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
