Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “There are three great ailments (maha-vyaadhis). What are the three?
They are: Vaata (wind) as a great ailment, Shleshman (phlegm) as a great ailment, and Shita (cold) as a great ailment.
Thus, O bhikshus, there are these three great ailments. However, there are also three good medicines for these three great ailments. What are the three?
For those suffering from wind ailments, ghee is a good medicine, as well as food made with ghee. For those suffering from phlegm ailments, honey is a good medicine, as well as food made with honey. For those suffering from cold ailments, oil is a good medicine, as well as food made with oil. Thus, O bhikshus, these three great ailments have these three medicines.
“Similarly, O bhikshus, there are these three great ailments. What are the three?
They are: greed, hatred, and delusion. Thus, O bhikshus, there are these three great ailments.
However, there are also three good medicines for these three great ailments. What are the three?
When greed arises, it is to be treated with the contemplation of impurity and the practice of the path of impurity.
For the great ailment of hatred, it is to be treated with loving-kindness and the practice of the path of loving-kindness.
For the great ailment of delusion, it is to be treated with wisdom and the practice of the path of dependent origination.
Thus, O bhikshus, these three ailments have these three medicines. Therefore, O bhikshus, you should strive to seek these three medicines. Thus, O bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
