Thus have I heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, There are three evil deeds. What are the three?

They are: evil deeds of the body, evil deeds of speech, and evil deeds of the mind. Thus, O bhikshus, there are these three evil deeds. You should strive to cultivate the three good deeds. What are the three?

For those who commit evil deeds of the body, they should cultivate good deeds of the body. For those who commit evil deeds of speech, they should cultivate good deeds of speech. For those who commit evil deeds of the mind, they should cultivate good deeds of the mind.

At that time, Bhagavaan spoke this verse:

Guard against evil deeds of the body, cultivate good deeds of the body,

Be mindful to abandon evil deeds of the body, and learn good deeds of the body.

Guard against evil deeds of speech, cultivate good deeds of speech,

Be mindful to abandon evil deeds of speech, and learn good deeds of speech.

Guard against evil deeds of the mind, cultivate good deeds of the mind,

Be mindful to abandon evil deeds of the mind, and learn good deeds of the mind.

Good deeds of the body are excellent, and so are good deeds of speech,

Good deeds of the mind are excellent, and so is everything else.

Guard speech and mind with purity, and do no evil with the body,

Purify these three paths of action, and reach the realm of the sages, the unconditioned state.

Thus, O bhikshus, you should abandon the three evil deeds and cultivate the three good deeds. Thus, O bhikshus, you should train yourselves.

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
