Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, the elder Anaathapindidas approached the Bhagavaan, prostrated at his feet, and sat to one side. The Bhagavaan asked: “How is it, elder? Does your noble family constantly give to the poor?”
The elder replied: “Indeed, Bhagavaan! We constantly give to the poor – making extensive offerings at the four city gates and providing necessities at home.
Bhagavaan, I sometimes consider giving even to wild animals, birds, pigs and dogs. I make no distinction between who should receive and who should not, nor do I discriminate in amounts given. I maintain this thought: All beings depend on food for survival – with food they live, without food they perish.”
The Bhagavaan said: “Excellent, excellent, elder! You maintain the Bodhisatva’s mind, single-pointedly devoted to generous giving. Indeed, beings are sustained by food and perish without it.
Elder, you will attain great fruits, widespread renown, and supreme rewards – your fame will reach everywhere and you will taste the nectar of Dharma.
Why? Because a Bodhisatva always gives with equal mind, single-pointedly aware that beings live by food and perish without it. This, elder, is the Bodhisatva’s mind established in generous giving.”
Then the Bhagavaan spoke this verse:
“Give universally without reserve,
Never with grudging or regret;
You will surely meet noble friends
Who help you reach the further shore.”
“Therefore, elder, give with equal mind. Thus, elder, should you practice.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
