Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, the Bhagavaan addressed the Bhikshus: “As I now thoroughly understand the dispositions of beings and the results of giving – even when giving away one’s last morsel of food without the slightest thought of resentment or jealousy. Ordinary beings don’t understand the fruits of giving as I do. The reward of giving is equal reward, with no difference in essence.
Thus, beings who cannot give equally fall into degradation, their minds constantly bound by stinginess and envy.”
「眾生不自覺, 如來之言教;
所施今善哉, 心向廣福田;
以到彼善處, 快樂自娛樂;
以天威德業, 玉女為營從;
Then the Bhagavaan spoke these verses:
“Beings unaware,
Of Tathaagata’s teaching;
Should always give universally,
Especially to the truly worthy.
With pure intention,
Merit multiplies greatly;
Share the merit equally,
Gaining vast future rewards.
Giving now is excellent,
When directed to fertile fields;
After leaving this human world,
Surely reborn in heaven.
Arriving in that blissful realm,
Enjoying happiness freely;
Extremely joyful and auspicious,
Lacking nothing whatsoever.
Through celestial virtues,
Attended by heavenly maidens;
Equal giving brings equal reward,
Thus one obtains these blessings.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
