A Translation As It Is

EA 10.8 Maara the Wicked one

0:00

Thus have I heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Bhagavaan addressed the Bhikshus: If one upholds one thing and does not abandon it, Maara Paapiiyas will find no opportunity, nor will he be able to disturb that person.

What is this one thing?

It is meritorious deeds and the cultivation of blessings. Why is this so?

I recall in the past, while seated beneath the Bodhi tree, surrounded by great Bodhisatvas, the wicked Maara Paapiiyas arrived with an army of countless millions—beings of varied forms, with beastly heads and human bodies beyond reckoning. Devas, naagas, spirits, asuras, garuas, kimnaras, and others all gathered.

Then, Maara Paapiiyas said to me: Shramana, fall down at once! But through the mighty power of merit, the Budha subdued the forces of Maara, dispelled all defilements, and became free from corruption, attaining the unsurpassed, true enlightenment.

O Bhikshus! Reflect on this meaning: A Bhikshu who is endowed with merit cannot be harmed by the wicked Maara Paapiiyas, nor can his merit be destroyed.

Then, the Bhagavaan spoke this verse:

Those with merit are happy;
Those without merit suffer.
In this life and the next,
Merit brings joy.”

Therefore, O Bhikshus! Do not grow weary in cultivating merit.

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
