A Translation As It Is

EA 12.7 Devaduta

0:00

Thus I have heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

設彼不與者,提婆達兜愚人終不作此惡;

Then the Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus:

“Material gains are extremely heavy burdens that prevent people from attaining the Anuttara Samyak-Sambodhi.

For this reason, O bhikshus! That foolish Devadata accepted five hundred pots of food offerings from Prince Bhaaluki. Had he not received them, that foolish Devadata would never have committed such evils. But because Prince Bhaaluki daily offered him five hundred pots of food, Devadata consequently committed the five heinous crimes, and after his bodily death, he was reborn in the Great Aviici Hell.

From this example, you should understand how material gains are a heavy burden that prevent people from attaining the Anuttara Samyak-Sambodhi.

If thoughts of material gain have not yet arisen, they should not be allowed to arise; if they have already arisen, they should be eliminated.

Thus, O bhikshus, should you train yourselves.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
