Thus I have heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
Then the Bhagavaan addressed the Bhikshus:
“Accepting material offerings is an extremely heavy burden, making it difficult to attain the unconditioned (asamskrta) state. Why is this?
The retribution of material gains first cuts through one’s skin, then having cut the skin, it severs the flesh; having severed the flesh, it splits the bones; having split the bones, it penetrates to the marrow.
O Bhikshus! By this analogy you should understand how grave material gains are.
If thoughts of material gain have not yet arisen, do not let them arise; if they have already arisen, strive to eliminate them.
Thus, O Bhikshus, should you train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
