Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan said to the Bhikshus, “In this assembly, I do not see a single practice that, when cultivated and frequently practiced, leads to rebirth in hell, as a hungry ghost, or as an animal. If one is reborn as a human, their breath will be foul, and they will be despised by others.
What is this practice? It is false speech. Bhikshus, if someone engages in false speech, frivolous speech, or sows discord, they will fall into the realms of animals or hungry ghosts. Why is this? Because of their false speech. Therefore, you should be truthful and avoid false speech. Thus, Bhikshus, you should train yourselves in this way.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
