EA 14.9 Drinking Alcohol / English

0:00

Thus have I heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, Bhagavaan said to the bhikshus,

In this assembly, I do not see a single practice that, when cultivated and frequently practiced, leads to the suffering of animals, hungry ghosts, and hell-beings. If one is reborn as a human, they will be foolish, confused, and unable to distinguish truth from falsehood.

What is this practice?

It is drinking alcohol.

Bhikshus, if someone has a fondness for drinking alcohol, wherever they are reborn, they will lack wisdom and always be filled with foolishness.

Therefore, bhikshus, you must be careful not to drink alcohol. Thus, bhikshus, you should train yourselves in this way.

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
