Two Characteristics of a Fool

Thus I have heard: One time, the Budha was staying at

Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Bhagavaan said to the bhikshus:

“A fool has these two characteristics and appearances. What are these two?

A fool attempts what they are incapable of accomplishing, and when they are close to completing something, they grow weary and abandon it.

“This, bhikkhus, is what is meant by the two characteristics and appearances of a fool.”

“Furthermore, bhikkhus, a wise person has two characteristics and appearances.

What are these two?

A wise person does not attempt what they are incapable of accomplishing, and when they are close to completing something, they do not grow weary or abandon it…”

“Therefore, bhikkhus, you should abandon the two characteristics and appearances of a fool and diligently cultivate the two characteristics of a wise person.

Thus, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves in this way.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it

with joy.
