Raahula

Thus I have heard: One time, the Budha was staying at

Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Venerable Raahula diligently upheld and practiced the precepts, committing no transgressions.  He avoided even the smallest offences, let alone greater ones.  However, he had not yet attained liberation of the mind from the defilements.

At that time, many bhikshus went to the Bhagavaan, bowed with their heads at his feet, and sat to one side.  Then, those bhikshus said to the Bhagavaan:

“The bhikshu Raahula diligently upholds and practices the precepts,
committing no transgressions.  However, his leaking mind is still not liberated from the defilements.”

At that time, the Bhagavaan spoke the following verse:

“One who is fully endowed with the precepts,
Whose faculties are also well-restrained,
Will gradually attain liberation,
Bringing all defilements to an end.”

“Therefore, bhikshus, you should always remember to cultivate and practice the true Dharma, without any negligence or omission.

Thus, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
