Nirvaana

Thus I have heard: One time, the Budha was staying at

Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Bhagavaan said to the bhikshus:

“There are two kinds of Nirvaana realms. What are the two?

The Nirvaana with remainder and the Nirvaana without remainder.

What is meant by the Nirvaana with remainder?

Here, a bhikshu extinguishes the five lower fetters and, upon passing away, attains Parinirvaana, never returning to this world.

This is called the Nirvaana with remainder.”

“And what is meant by the Nirvaana without remainder?

Here, a bhikshu has completely exhausted all defilements and attained the state free from leaking.

With liberation of mind and liberation through wisdom, he personally realizes it and abides in this state, knowing for himself:

“Birth and death have been extinguished, the noble life has been established, what had to be done has been done.  I know that I will not born again in future.”

This is called the Nirvaana without remainder.

These are the two kinds of Nirvaana realms.”

“You should strive diligently and skillfully to attain the Nirvaana without remainder.

Thus, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
