Two Things

Thus I have heard: One time, the Budha was staying at

Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Bhagavaan said to the bhikshus:

“There are two dharmas in this world that bring great affliction.

What are these two?

One is the root of all evils, giving rise to enmity and resentment.

The other is the neglect of performing wholesome deeds, which are the foundation of virtue.

Thus, bhikshus, these two dharmas bring great affliction.”

“Therefore, bhikshus, you should recognise these afflictive dharmas, and you should also recognise the dharmas that are free from affliction.

The dharmas that bring affliction should be carefully abandoned.
The dharmas that do not bring affliction should be carefully cultivated.

Thus, bhikshus, you should practice in this way.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
