- 聞如是：
一時，佛在羅閱城迦羅陀竹園所，與大比丘五百人俱。前後圍遶而為說法。
Thus have I heard:
At one time, Budha was staying in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove near Raajagṛha, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikshus. Surrounded by them, he was expounding the Dharma.
2. 爾時，提婆達兜將五百比丘去如來不遠而[2]逕過。世尊遙見提婆達兜自將門徒，便說此偈：
「莫親惡知識，亦莫愚從事；
當近善知識，人中最勝者。
人本無有惡，習近惡知識，
後必種惡根，永在闇冥中。」
At that time, Devadata, accompanied by five hundred bhikshus, passed by not far from the Tathaagata. Budha, seeing Devadata leading his disciples from a distance, spoke this verse:
“Do not associate with bad friends,
Nor foolishly follow their ways.
Associate with good friends,
The best among people.
Originally, people have no evil,
But by associating with bad friends,
They will surely plant evil roots,
And remain forever in darkness.”
3. 是時，提婆達兜五百弟子聞世尊說此偈已，便來至世尊所，頭面禮足，在一面坐。斯須退坐，向世尊悔過：「我等愚惑，無所[4]識知，唯願世尊受我等懺悔。」
At that time, the five hundred disciples of Devadata, hearing Budha speak this verse, went to Budha, bowed their heads at his feet, and sat to one side. After a short while, they rose from their seats and repented before Budha, saying, “We were foolish and deluded, lacking understanding. We beseech Budha to accept our repentance.”
4. 爾時，世尊受彼五百比丘懺悔，便與說法，令得信根。
At that time, Budha accepted the repentance of the five hundred Bhikshus and expounded the Dharma to them, enabling them to develop the root of faith.
5. 爾時，五百比丘在閑靜之處思惟深法。所以然者，族姓子出家學道，以信堅固，修無上梵行。爾時，彼五百比丘便成阿羅漢：生死已盡，[6]所作已辦，梵行已立，更不復受胎有，如實知之。爾時，五百人成阿羅漢。
At that time, the five hundred bhikshus, in a quiet place, contemplated the profound Dharma. As noble youths who had left home to practice the path, with firm faith, they cultivated the supreme noble life.
Then, those five hundred bhikshus became Arhats: they had exhausted birth and death, completed what needed to be done, established the noble life, and would no longer be subject to rebirth. They knew this as it truly was. At that time, the five hundred became Arhats.
6. 諸比丘聞佛所說，歡喜奉行。
The bhikshus, hearing Budha’s words, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
