EA 22.3 Three Feelings

0:00

Thus have I heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, There are these three kinds of feelings. What are the three?

They are pleasant feelings, painful feelings, and neutral feelings. Bhikshus, you should know that pleasant feelings are driven by desire and attachment; painful feelings are driven by anger and aversion; and neutral feelings are driven by delusion.

Therefore, bhikshus, you should strive to eliminate these drivers. For this reason, you should be diligent, practice the Dharma, and attain the incomparable Dharma. Bhikshus, you should know that after my pari-nirvana, any bhikshu who is diligent, practices the Dharma, and attains the incomparable Dharma will be the foremost among disciples.

How, bhikshus, should one become self-illumined (aatma-jyotih), diligently cultivate the path, realize the practice of Dharma, and attain the unsurpassed Dharma?

A bhikshu should observe the body internally, observe the body externally, and observe the body both internally and externally, contemplating it with mindfulness.

One should observe vedana (feelings) internally, observe vedana externally, and observe vedana both internally and externally – fully contemplate vedana as they arise and cease.

One should observe the mind (citta) internally, observe the mind externally, and observe the mind both internally and externally – contemplate the states of mind with clarity and equanimity.

One should observe dharmas (mental phenomena) internally, observe dharmas externally, and observe dharmas both internally and externally – discern the arising and passing of dharmas, delighting in wise contemplation.

In this way, O bhikshus, you should be self-kindled (aatmadiipa), ardently practice the dharma, and thus attain the unsurpassed path (anuttara-dharma).

Those bhikshus who practice this way – will be the foremost among the shraavakas (disciples) in realisation. Thus, O bhikshus, you should train yourselves in this way.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
