Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “There are three things that are better when concealed and worse when exposed. What are the three?
First, women—they are better when concealed and worse when exposed.
Second, brahamana’s mantras and incantations (mantra-vidyaa)—when kept secret, they are effective and fine; when disclosed, they lose their virtue.
Third, actions based on wrong views—when hidden, it appears acceptable; when exposed, it is shameful and corrupt.
Thus, bhikshus, these three things are better when concealed and worse when exposed.
“Furthermore, there are three things that are better when exposed and worse when concealed. What are the three?
The sun and moon—when they shine forth, they are marvelous; when obscured, they are not.
The teachings of the Tathaagata—when revealed and proclaimed, it is sublime; when hidden, it loses its virtue.
Thus, bhikshus, these three things are better when exposed and worse when concealed.”
At that time, Bhagavaan spoke this verse:
“Women, mantras (incantations), and actions born of wrong views—
These three worldly things are best when concealed, not exposed.
The sun and moon, whose light shines everywhere,
And the true teachings of the Tathaagata—
These three things of the world are best when exposed.”
“Therefore, O bhikshus, let the Dharma of the Tathaagata be openly proclaimed; do not let it be concealed. In this way, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
