Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “There are three characteristics of conditioned Dharma. What are the three?
They are:
1. knowing their origin,
2. knowing their change, and
3. knowing their cessation.
What is meant by knowing their origin?
It is understanding birth, the growth and development of the five aggregates (pancha-skandhaah), and the arising of faculties and sense-bases. This is called knowing their origin.
What is knowing their cessation?
It is understanding death, the impermanence of life, the disintegration of the aggregates (pancha-skandhaah), the separation from family and loved ones, and the severing of the life force. This is called knowing their cessation.
What is knowing their change?
It is understanding decay and change, the falling of teeth, the graying of hair, the decline of strength, and with the advancing age,
the body declines and begins to disintegrate. This is called knowing the nature of change.
Therefore, bhikshus, these are the three characteristics of conditioned Dharma. You should recognize and clearly discern these three characteristics. In this way, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
