Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “A foolish person has three characteristics and three behaviours that are unreliable. What are the three?
A fool thinks about what should not be thought about, speaks about what should not be spoken about, and practices what should not be practiced.
“How does a fool think about what should not be thought about?
A fool engages in three mental behaviours. What are the three?
A fool gives rise to jealousy, coveting others’ wealth and women, and harbours malicious thoughts, thinking, ‘May what they have become mine.’ In this way, a fool thinks about what should not be thought about.
“How does a fool speak about what should not be spoken about?
A fool commits four verbal transgressions. What are the four?
A fool habitually engages in false speech, frivolous speech, harsh speech, and divisive speech. In this way, a fool commits these four verbal transgressions.
“How does a fool practice what should not be practiced?
A fool commits three bodily misdeeds: killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct. In this way, a fool practices what should not be practiced.
Thus, bhikshus, a foolish person has these three behaviours, and a deluded person engages in these three things.
“Furthermore, bhikshus, a wise person has three practices that should be cultivated. What are the three?
A wise person thinks about what should be thought about, speaks about what should be spoken about, and practices what should be practiced.
“How does a wise person think about what should be thought about?
A wise person engages in three mental behaviours. What are the three?
A wise person is free from jealousy, anger, and delusion, always abides in right view, and does not covet others’ wealth. In this way, a wise person thinks about what should be thought about.
“How does a wise person speak about what should be spoken about?
A wise person achieves four verbal practices. What are the four?
A wise person does not engage in false speech, nor does he encourage others to do so, and he does not take pleasure in hearing false speech. This is how a wise person guards his speech. Furthermore, a wise person does not engage in frivolous speech, harsh speech, or divisive speech, nor does he encourage others to do so. In this way, a wise person achieves these four verbal practices.
“How does a wise person achieve three bodily practices?
A wise person reflects on bodily actions and avoids wrongdoing. A wise person does not kill, nor does he encourage others to kill, and he does not take pleasure in seeing others kill. He does not steal, nor does he encourage others to steal, and he does not take pleasure in seeing others steal. He does not engage in sexual misconduct, nor does he encourage others to do so. When he sees women, he does not harbour lustful thoughts. He regards older women as his mother, middle-aged women as his sisters, and younger women as his daughters, treating them with respect and without discrimination. In this way, a wise person achieves these three bodily practices. Thus, bhikshus, these are the characteristics of a wise person.
Therefore, bhikshus, you should always abandon the three characteristics of a fool and cultivate the three practices of a wise person without delay. In this way, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
