Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “There are three things that are deeply cherished and desired by the world. What are the three?
They are,
youth, which is deeply cherished and desired by the world;
health, which is deeply cherished and desired by the world; and
life, which is deeply cherished and desired by the world.
Thus, bhikshus, these three things are deeply cherished and desired by the world.
“Furthermore, bhikshus, although these three things are deeply cherished and desired by the world, there are three other things that are not cherished or desired by the world. What are the three?
Although there is youth, it inevitably leads to old age, which is not cherished or desired by the world.
Bhikshus, you should know that although there is health, it inevitably leads to sickness, which is not cherished or desired by the world.
Bhikshus, you should know that although there is life, it inevitably leads to death, which is not cherished or desired by the world.
Therefore, bhikshus, even if you have youth, you should strive to transcend aging and reach the realm of Nirvana. Even if you have health, you should strive to avoid sickness. Even if you have life, you should strive to transcend death. In this way, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
