Thus have I heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.
At that time, Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus, saying, “Just as in spring, when large hailstones fall from the sky, so too, if the Tathaagata does not appear in the world, beings fall into hell. At that time, more women fall into hell than men. Why is this?
Bhikshus, you should know that there are three things that cause beings, upon the breakup of the body and the end of life, to fall into the three evil realms. What are the three?
They are craving, sloth, and frivolous behaviour (playful teasing or sensual play). When these three bind the mind and heart, at the end of life and the breaking of the body, one is reborn into the three evil realms.
“Women spend their days indulging in and amusing themselves with these three things. What are the three?
In the morning, they are bound by jealousy; at noon, they are wrapped in the knot of sloth and torpor; and in the evening, they are entangled by a mind of craving and desire. Because of these causes, women, upon the breakup of the body and the end of life, are reborn in the three evil realms. Therefore, bhikshus, you should strive to abandon these three things.”
At that time, Bhagavaan spoke this verse:
“Jealousy, sloth, and frivolity,
Craving is an evil dharma—
They drag people to hell,
Where there is no liberation.
Therefore, one should abandon
Jealousy, sloth, and frivolity,
And also let go of cravings—
Do not commit such evil deeds.”
“Therefore, bhikshus, you should strive to abandon jealousy, free yourselves from stinginess, always practice generosity, avoid attachment to sloth, and remain free from the stains of greed. In this way, bhikshus, you should train yourselves.”
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
