A Translation As It Is

EA 23.10 Examining the Here and Hereafter

0:00

Thus I have heard:

One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavastii.

At that time, the Bhagavaan said to the bhikshus, “There are these three kinds of perceptions (samjna). What are the three?

They are the perception of sensual desire, the perception of hatred, and the perception of harm.

These are the three perceptions. Bhikshus, you should know that if one has the perception of sensual desire, at the time of death, one will fall into hell. If one has the perception of hatred, at the time of death, one will be reborn among animals, such as chickens, dogs, snakes, and other such creatures. If one has the perception of harm, at the time of death, one will be reborn among hungry ghosts, where the body is burning and the suffering is indescribable.

Thus, Bhikshus, these three perceptions lead to rebirth in hell, among hungry ghosts, and among animals.”

“There are another three perceptions (samjna). What are the three?

They are the perception of renunciation, the perception of non-harm, and the perception of non-hatred. If one has the perception of renunciation, at the time of death, one will be reborn among humans. If one has the perception of non-harm, at the time of death, one will naturally be reborn in the heavenly realms. If one has a mind free from killing, at the time of death, one will sever the five lower fetters and attain Nirvana in that very place. Thus, bhikshus, you should constantly cultivate these three perceptions and avoid the three evil perceptions. Thus, bhikshus, you should practice in this way.”

When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
