Thus I have heard: At one time, Budha was staying in the Kalandaka-nivapa (Bamboo Grove) in Raajagriha, accompanied by a great assembly of five hundred bhikshus.
At that time, Bhagavaan robed himself, took his bowl, and entered Raajagriha to beg for food. At the same time, Devadata also entered the city to beg for food. When Devadata entered a certain alley, Bhagavaan also went there. However, upon seeing Devadata from a distance, Bhagavaan decided to turn back.
Aananda asked Bhagavaan, “Why do you wish to avoid this alley?”
Bhagavaan replied, “Devadata is now in this alley, so I am avoiding it.”
Aananda said, “Bhagavaan, are you afraid of Devadata?”
Bhagavaan said, “I am not afraid of Devadata, but such an evil person should not be met.”
Aananda said, “Indeed, Bhagavaan! Could Devadata be sent elsewhere?”
At that time, Bhagavaan spoke this verse:
“I have no intention of sending him elsewhere.
He will create his own actions,
And thus will be in his own place.”
Aananda said to Bhagavaan, “But Devadata has committed offences against the Tathaagata.”
Bhagavaan said, “One should not meet with a foolish and deluded person.”
Then, Bhagavaan spoke this verse to Aananda:
“Do not associate with fools,
Do not engage with them,
Do not converse with them,
Or discuss right and wrong matters.”
At that time, Aananda replied to Bhagavaan with this verse:
“What harm can fools do?
What faults do fools have?
Even if we speak with them,
What harm could come of it?”
At that time, Bhagavaan replied to Aananda with this verse:
“Fools create their own actions,
Their deeds are unrighteous.
They oppose the true teachings,
And their wrong views grow daily.
“Therefore, Aananda, do not associate with bad companions. Associating with fools leads to lack of faith, lack of discipline, lack of learning, and lack of wisdom. Associating with good companions increases virtues and perfects discipline. Thus, Aananda, you should train yourself in this way.”
At that time, Aananda, having heard Budha’s words, followed it with joy.
