- 闻如是：
一时，佛在舍卫国祇树给孤独园。
Thus I have heard:
One time, the Budha was staying at Anaathapindidas Ashrama in Jetavana of Shraavasti.
2. 尔时，世尊告诸比丘：
「有四种云。
云何为四？
或有云雷而不雨，或有云雨而不雷，或有云亦雨亦雷，或有云亦不雨亦不雷，是谓四种云。
世间四种人而像云，何等四人？
或有比丘雷而不雨，或有比丘雨而不雷，或有比丘亦不雨亦不雷，或有比丘亦雨亦雷。
Then the Bhagavaan addressed the bhikshus:
“There are four kinds of clouds.
What four?
Some clouds thunder but don’t rain;
some rain but don’t thunder;
some both rain and thunder;
some neither rain nor thunder.
So too, there are four kinds of people comparable to clouds.
What four?
Some bhikshus thunder but don’t rain;
some rain but don’t thunder;
some neither rain nor thunder;
some both rain and thunder.
3. 「彼云何比丘雷而不雨？
或有比丘高声诵习，所谓契经、祇夜、受决、偈、本末、因缘、已说、生经、颂、方等、未曾有法、譬喻。
如是诸法，善讽诵读，不失其义；不广与人说法。
是谓此人雷而不雨。
“How does a bhikshu thunder but not rain?
One who recites loudly the various teachings – sutras, mixed prose and verse, predictions, verses, stories, causes, discourses, birth stories, hymns, expanded teachings, marvellous phenomena, and parables.
He recites them well without losing their meaning, but doesn’t widely teach others. This one thunders but doesn’t rain.
4. 「彼云何人雨而不雷？
或比丘有颜色端正，出入行来，进止之宜，皆悉具知，修诸善法，无毫厘之失；
然不多闻，亦不高声诵习，复不修行契经、本末、授决、偈、因缘、譬喻、生经、方等、未曾有法，然从他承受，亦不忘失，好与善知识相随，亦好与他说法。
是谓此人雨而不雷。
“How does a bhikshu rain but not thunder?
One with handsome features who knows proper deportment in all activities, perfectly practicing wholesome dharmas without the slightest fault.
Though not learned nor reciting loudly, nor practicing the various teachings, he learns from others without forgetting, associates with good friends, and enjoys teaching others.
This one rains but doesn’t thunder.
5. 「彼何等人亦不雨亦复不雷？
或有一人颜色不端正，出入行来，进止之宜，皆悉不具，不修诸善法；
然不多闻，亦不高声诵习读，复不修行契经至方等，亦复不与他说法。
是谓此人亦不雨亦不雷。
“Who neither rains nor thunders?
One with unattractive features, lacking proper deportment, not practicing wholesome dharmas; unlearned, not reciting aloud, not practicing the teachings, nor teaching others.
This one neither rains nor thunders.
6. 「复有何等人亦雨亦雷？
或有一人颜色端正，出入行来，进止之宜，亦悉具知，好喜学问，所受不失；亦好与他说法，劝进他人，令使承受。
是谓此人亦雷亦雨。
是谓，比丘！世间有此四人。
是故，比丘！当作是学。」
“Who both rains and thunders?
One with handsome features, perfect deportment, who loves learning and retains what he learns;
who enjoys teaching others and encourages them to accept the Dharma.
This one both rains and thunders.
These, bhikshus, are the four kinds of people.
Therefore, bhikshus, you should train accordingly.”
7. 尔时，诸比丘闻佛所说，欢喜奉行。
When the bhikshus heard what the Budha said, they followed it with joy.
